Research has shown that gabapentin, a medication primarily used for neuropathic pain and seizures, has been explored for its potential benefits in managing symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the evidence is mixed, and its use in PD is not well-established. Beyond an optimization of anti-parkinsonian treatment, additional pain treatment strategies are usually needed to properly address pain in PD. A careful pain history and diagnostic work-up is essential to rate the underlying pain pathophysiology and to develop a targeted therapeutic concept. Neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD), have increased in prevalence and are expected to further increase in the coming decades. In this regard, PD affects around 3% of the population by age 65 and up to 5% of people over the age of 85.
