Strategies for the Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome: "Opioid therapy is reserved for cases that do not respond adequately to dopamine agonists and anticonvulsants. They are typically not first-line therapy. Gabapentin has an average rating of 7.5 out of 10 from a total of 117 reviews for the off-label treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome. 68% of reviewers reported a positive experience, while 18% reported a negative experience. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it to be discouraging, just an FYI. :( My RLS is still 99% under control, though (the 1% being that I get faint twinges of a possible episode when my allergies are so bad that I have to break down and take benadryl just to not be miserable lol). Having the RLS controlled should be a massive help to you regardless. Neither works for my RLS but the gabapentin controls my bladder pain and FM. Would go crazy if I didn’t have it. As others have said, gabapentin does not cause augmentation (one of the great benefits of its use). RLS affects several biochemical pathways in the brain and gabapentin works though a different pathway than the dopamine agonists. I take Gabapentin for migraines, but, for awhile, it also helped lessen my PLMD (RLS with arm movement). However, it stopped working earlier this year for the PLMD. My neurologist started me on Pramipexole, and the difference is astounding!! According to the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS: "Most RLS patients require 1200 to 1800 mg of gabapentin." If you take magnesium even in a multivitamin, don't take it within 3 hours of taking gabapentin as it will interfere with the absorption of gabapentin and don't take calcium nor calcium-rich foods within 2 hours for the same reason. In my experience it works when your RLS is moderate/mild, and doesn’t work when your RLS is bad/severe. I used to be so mad at it not working but now that mine is more mild it now works (mostly). It’s also basically the only medication that makes you sleep better without making RLS worse. No. Went all the way up to 1200mg at bed time. No luck. I tried pregabalin but it did nothing for my RLS. Gabapentin helped but it kept having to be increased so I got off that. I don't know why anyone would be worried about taking Lyrica (pregabalin) it's simply a nerve med, usually used for diabetic nerve pain . I have been using Gabapentin for RLS, it has worked very well, it also has helped with my anxiety and a mood lift to my depression. I have noticed that if i try to stop using Gabapentin then around the 3rd day the RLS start to come back with other light WDs as well. According to the Mayo Clinic Updated Algorithm on RLS: "Most RLS patients require 1200 to 1800 mg of gabapentin (200 to 300 mg pregabalin)." Has anyone been prescribed gabapentin for restless leg syndrome? I’ve been on it for 2 years to help with RLS but had no clue it was an off label for anxiety. I only take 100mg at night so I didn’t notice any negative side effects (I thought gabapentin was only used as an anti-seizure med). Just curious to see if anyone is taking it for RLS! Various natural solutions to Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) that have helped my bad RLS Triggers I've been meaning to write a summary of my findings and solutions that I've built up after my RLS has become increasingly bad in the last few years. I've been on Gabapentin since February, which worked well for a few months, taking 600Mg, however over the last few months I've had to continually increase the dosage, but it's not making any difference. In fact it feels as if my RLS is getting worse. I am on Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil). It’s superior to plain old gabapentin because it metabolizes more slowly, therefore you only have to take 1 dose at night, less side effects, etc. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disorder. The population prevalence is 1.5% to 2.7% in a subgroup of patients having more severe RLS with symptoms occurring 2 or more times a week and causing at least moderate distress. It is important for primary care physicians to be familiar with the disorder and its management. Much has changed in the management of RLS since our previous revised Then I started realizing my legs felt better, and I learned Gabapentin can be used to treat RLS. Then I finally connected all the dots — my insomnia was probably driven by RLS (even when I didn’t feel like I was having a flare up). So yes, for me it helps a lot, but it isn’t a magic pill. I've been on and off Gabapentin for 15 years, always starts out low dosage but always has to be increased, increase gives me edema and then they prescribe a water pill (bad for kidneys) I've finally decided to do without it, I can't see taking cate of one problem to get another, I had an Uncle that ended up on dialysis due to water pills, not looking for that..so, no Gabapentin for me anymore. Gabapentin - the front-line RLS treatment for intermittent and mild-moderate RLS. The RLS specific formula is called Horizant. Dopamine Agonist - the gold standard for RLS treatment for daily and moderate RLS. Dermal patch (Neupro) is showing fewer problems with augmentation. Your oral choices are Pramipexole or Ropinerole. Next, gabapentin for RLS works differently than with nerve pain (what is was originally designed for). If there is no other option for a medical professional, you can share this document with your doc, especially the part that describes gabapentin dosing. No matter what medication we are taking for RLS I feel that there are always nights (and days) that are not so good. From my own experience I feel there is always breakthrough to be expected. Gabapentin at 200mg is not a high dose. Is Gabapentin your only medication for rls.
