Most drug rashes are mild and cause an itchy rash that’s red or pink (in fair skin) or purple or skin-colored (in darker skin tones). More severe rashes are much less common. They lead to widespread blisters and are life-threatening. The most common medications that cause skin reactions are antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and NSAIDs. Luckily the scary ones are pretty rare, but it's still a good idea to know how to spot them. How can you tell the serious rashes from ones that are just a nuisance, but will get better with time and treatment? Types of drug rashes. There are two main allergic rashes that may happen after taking a drug. Other gabapentin side effects include edema (fluid buildup), weight gain, and eye problems, but these aren’t as common. Case summary: An 8-year-old boy with a neurodegenerative disease of unknown origin and an epilepsy disorder developed an urticarial rash and irritability 10 and 4 days, respectively, after the start of gabapentin 20 mg/kg 3 times a day for epilepsy control. Gabapentin is a well-established treatment option for itch with a reassuring safety profile that does not require continued lab monitoring.
