Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set (UDS; September 2005-March 2021 data freeze). From the eligible sample (≥age 65 years), we identified cognitively normal new-users of gabapentin and the visit they initiated gabapentin (i.e., index visit). Thus, this study aimed to examine the association of gabapentin initiation with cognitive and motor function decline in older adult participants with cognitive impairment. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set (2005-March 2023). We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Gabapentin use was significantly associated with decline in cognitive and functional status among older adults with initially normal cognition. Further studies are needed to examine the association. Memory impairment and cognitive decline are two of the greatest concerns with long-term administration of drugs that affect the CNS. In this study, we discovered a significant association between cumulative exposure to gabapentin and pregabalin and the risk of dementia. However, recent studies have shown a potential link between gabapentin use and memory problems, leading to questions about its safety and long-term effects on cognitive function. Key Takeaways: Gabapentin use has been associated with memory loss and cognitive decline. A study published in 2020 found that patients aged 12-22 who took gabapentin experienced short-term memory loss in the form of difficulty in remembering new information. However, those aged 23-65 were more likely to experience long-term memory loss, including difficulty in recalling previously learned information. This study aims to conclude whether gabapentinoids can alter memory or not by reviewing and analyzing clinical and preclinical studies. A comprehensive search was carried out in databases including PUBMED, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. In a cross-over study comparing cognitive effects of carbamazepine vs gabapentin in healthy adults, Meador et al. found that cognitive performance while taking gabapentin was statistically better than while taking carbamazepine in 8 out of 31 neuropsychological variables; however, when compared with performance while not taking either Prospective observational cohort study. To assess the effects of gabapentin on neuropsychological variables including memory, attention, and executive function in individuals with spinal cord injury. This study aims to conclude whether gabapentinoids can alter memory or not by reviewing and analyzing clinical and preclinical studies. Material and methods: A comprehensive search was carried out in databases including PUBMED, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. The phase IV clinical study analyzes which people have Memory loss when taking Neurontin, including time on the drug, (if applicable) gender, age, co-used drugs and more. It is created by eHealthMe based on reports of 103,969 people who have side effects when taking Neurontin from the FDA, and is updated regularly. This study found that not only can Gabapentin cause memory loss when abused, but it can also lead to other cognitive problems that can contribute to memory impairment. Also, Gabapentin's long-term use side effects present other dangers, such as weakened muscles, fatal toxicity, and respiratory failure. While the evidence suggests that gabapentin alone does not cause memory loss, it can lead to brain fog or minor confusion. However, combining gabapentin with other drugs like baclofen can result in significant memory loss and impairment. We conducted this population-based cohort study to understand the risk of acute altered mental status and mortality within 30 days of initiating a high versus low dose of gabapentin in older adults, a segment of the population at higher risk of adverse drug events. Several studies have reported that gabapentin has a deleterious effect on cognition (Leach et al., 1997; Meador et al., 1999; Shem et al., 2018). A prospective observational cohort study has reported that gabapentin initiators with spinal cord injury had a cognitive decrease using neuropsychological tests. The phase IV clinical study analyzes which people have Memory loss when taking Gabapentin, including time on the drug, (if applicable) gender, age, co-used drugs and more. It is created by eHealthMe based on reports of 313,421 people who have side effects when taking Gabapentin from the FDA, and is updated regularly. The aim of this study was to estimate the association of gabapentin initiation with changes in cognitive status, functional status, and motor changes up to 2 years later, in older adults with initially normal cognition. However, in this study, even in investigations that included healthy volunteers, the study period was short (only a few weeks) and the doses of gabapentin use were limited. In a review of post-marketing surveillance of pregabalin and gabapentin, most patients generally tolerated these two drugs well during treatment. Although studies have revealed the administration of some drugs involved in GABA mechanisms of function, can damage memory by harming the neural pathways responsible for controlling cognition [27–29], some preclinical studies of the efect of PGB on memory, have proven otherwise [22, 27, 30–35].
