If used as a mood stabilizer or anti-depressant, the dose is usually between 900 and 2,000 mg a day. But, it may also be increased for better results. Some people see improvement in their Studies don't really indicate it as a first-line approach to treating bipolar - it may have some anti-anxiety effects and possibly mood stabilizing effects but they pale in comparison to other meds in terms of proven efficacy. Unfortunately I've never found a working mood stabilizer. I'm just now coming off Topomax, my fifth failure as a mood stabilizer. Three of the mood stabilizers made me more unstable, and two did nothing. Half the time when I go to hospitals I end up with a psychiatrist who wants me on a mood stabilizer and won't take no for an answer. My psychiatrist recently put me on Gabapentin for as a mood stabilizer/ to address anxiety and depression ( we're exploring a possible Bipolar II diagnosis as well). I'm not taking any other meds and have had negative reactions to several SSRIs. Although gabapentin was traditionally used to treat seizures, it is now sometimes used as a mood stabilizer for depression and bipolar disorder because it calms neurons in the brain, and it may be effective for anxiety too. Does anyone take just gabapentin as a mood stabilizer? I’ve tried Lamictal (causes a rash inside my mouth and itchy eyes) and trileptal (made my period stop and caused severe balance issues) already. My psych wants to try gabapentin because she’s hesitant with prescribing antipsychotics, and I’m scared of them too. I'm type 2 and dug out a leftover gabapentin rx for my back and noticed I actually felt better, less bipolar depression and better energy. I looked it up and the only(?) study didn't show it works for it but anecdotal reports from individuals that are resistant to mood stabilizers have had some success and it can help with anxiety. Gabapentin is off label for bipolar disorder but from what my doctors have said its not really a good mood stablizer. I used it in the past for anxiety and it worked for that. I mean id say give it a shot and if i stablizes your mood thats great. We conclude that there is moderate evidence of the efficacy of gabapentinoids in anxiety states, but minimal evidence in bipolar disorder and insomnia and they should be used for these disorders When I finally met the doctor who diagnosed my bipolar disorder, he prescribed gabapentin as a mood stabilizer, as well as a sleeping aid (Ambien), and Zoloft (the only antidepressant that ever worked for me). I'm on mood stabilizers for Bipolar 1 AND PMDD. The literal life-saving one is Lithium. After I got out of the mental hospital (caused by a massive suicidal mood swing exasperated by PMDD, my period literally started the second day I got there), my psychiatrist (psych nurse) started me on Lithium. It has, however, been found effective as an adjunct medicine to other mood stablizers, acting as a booster. It works well as an anti-anxiety medicine. And it's a great sleep aid (my child takes it for restless body syndrome and sleep). At higher doses, Gabapentin can knock you out. Has anyone been prescribed gabapentin as a mood stabilizer? (instead of another anticonvulsant or lithium, for example) I feel that depakote even at the lowest dose is too strong for me but I don't do well without it either. I've tried gabapentin as an add-on PRN for anxiety but I'm wondering if folks use it in lieu of something like depakote. My mood is all over the place. I'm not seeing a psychiatrist at the moment, but I'm taking 50 MG of Sertraline for anxiety that my doctor prescribed me. Although it's helping my anxiety a bit, it's doing nothing for my mood swings. I'm thinking about asking my GP tomorrow if I can be prescribed a mood stabilizer. Currently, the most useful mood stabilizer combinations are the mixtures of anticonvulsants and lithium, particularly valproate plus lithium. Carbamazepine, lamotrigine, and gabapentin have also been added to lithium with apparent safety. Gabapentin is supposed to be really good for anxiety (arguably even amazing), but my doctor had said it's iffy as an anti-manic or anti-depressant "mood stabilizer." Mood stabilizer in quotes because it's kind of a bullshit term to describe meds that are either (or both) anti-manic or (atypical) anti-depressant agents. I just got prescribed 300mg of Gabapentin 3x a day, with the possibility to increase to 4x a day if needed. This is for long term management of anxiety but reading about everyone’s experience online is really stressing me out.
