I dont remember the specifics. I was eating muscle relaxers like candy to no effect. The Dr explained that I had a pinched nerve that was causing the paint not a muscle strain so thats why the Gabapentin worked so well and the flexeril/soma did not. I felt like it just masked the pain while I healed and let me get back to normal faster. I’ve been diagnosed with nerve pain from Functional Neurological Disorder and was prescribed pregabalin (which didn’t work for me) and then gabapentin. Overall gabapentin capsules being taken regularly at separate times throughout the day has made my pain seem lower overall. It's really only effective for nerve pain (burning, stinging, pins and needles, etc). Symptom, treatment and advice from community members My Dr is prescribing Neurontin to help deaden the nerve pain, but reading the side effects and people's experience with it on drug forums, I am hesitant to start taking it. It sounds like it can really mess with your brain, perception of the world and cognitive ability. I started taking gabapentin in 2016 after stabbing, fiery nerve pain post an L5/S1 fusion. It allowed me to get off of opioids which for me had worse side effects. Side effects for me on Gabapentin did not include any weight gain. Usually 500mg morning, 300mg lunch, 800mg with nortriptyline in the evening. The nortriptyline makes me really dizzy, so I try not to take it in the morning if I can stand the pain with just the gabapentin. Gabapentin did not help me in regards to managing nerve pain. Pregabalin however, is another story.. Gabapentin’s bioavailability isn’t that great, and it actually lessens with higher doses (studies have shown it decreases from 60% to 33% as the dose increased from 900mg to 3600mg/day). On the basic initial dose, gabapentin helped with my pain (I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, secondary fibromyalgia, and nerve damage in my lower back). Once winter came, however, the improvement was negated, so the GP doubled that dose, but that gave me the most horrendous spells of vertigo and dizziness - it wasn't too much later I I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. Usually without food first thing in am and then after dinner in the pm. I can't tell any difference between food/no food. I was having bad nerve pain in my foot after surgery so about a week after Dr started me on 100 MG 3x day, I decided to take 300 MG 2x day. I found that this dose/schedule worked better for me. Gabapentin completely eliminated the pain and numbess for a bit over a year. Eventually the pain and numbness came back even stronger and the doctor recommended cymbalta. Now with taking both medications im living much more comfortably. I might get severe pain only a couple times a week now, rather than all throughout the day. I personally stay away from anti-psychotics. A dr 15 years ago prescribed this for insomnia. I slept 15 hrs straight. I realize your body gets used to it, but still. I could not work the next day taking that drug. I take gabapentin for nerve pain, and it helps me sleep well. I don't trust this drug, but for now I think it's necessary. Yes, it's been very effective for me and my nerve pain. I was too the point of telling my Dr that I wanted my legs amputated below the knees because it was so bad. He tried gabapentin first because of the cost involved. Pregabalin starts at and is in lower doses bc it’s stronger. Gabapentin is a relative and starting doses are 300mg 3x a day. Gabapentin is also indicated for other uses such as seizures, anxiety and nerve pain where pregabalin (lyrica) is mostly indicated for nerve pain. I take it for nerve pain as well, and it will most likely be increased graduallyI started at 100mg 3x a day too, but within 4 weeks was up to 100mg 6x a day, then the following month it was increased to 300mg 3x a day, and eventually to what it is now, which is 600mg 4x a day, and it MAY go even higher still, to a max of 3600mg a day I don't have much to contribute as to what might help with nerve pain but I have some cautionary experiences from gabapentin and amitripyline. i took up to 2700 daily of Gabapentin, and 200 Amatripyline and I also had the crazy cotton mouth and unbeknownest to me after the first year of crazy drymouth I got my first dental cavity. The symptoms come and go depending on stress and exertion. What I have noticed since taking the gabapentin is that the symptoms don't seem to lessen when I am well rested and not overly stressed. I have also noticed that sometimes, especially when laying down, swallowing takes effort. My reason for the gabapentin is nerve damage from a fall. Nerve pain after shingles, restless leg syndrome, and partial seizures are the on-label uses. It can help with other types of nerve pain and nerve issues as well, and is often prescribed that way. Edit: The documentation I'm reading says that the drug should be withdrawn gradually, and that the maximum time between doses should be 12 hours.
