gabapentin neuropathy numbness will 300 mg of gabapentin cause weight gain

I've been on Gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy for 6 years now. I have numbness in the soles of both feet, yet I describe my sensations without Gaba as random pain in spots of my feet as though I'm walking on rocks, and I would get electric jolts in my feet as I tried to sleep. The way gabapentin alleviates numbness is tied closely to its ability to dampen nerve excitability. By inhibiting certain calcium channels on neurons, gabapentin reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters that can cause heightened sensitivity and pain perception. Gabapentin for Peripheral Neuropathy User Reviews Brand names: Neurontin, Gralise, Gabarone, Fanatrex Gabapentin has an average rating of 6.3 out of 10 from a total of 185 reviews for the off-label treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I can't say that it has decreased my pain at all. In fact, my pain has gotten steadily worse. I was just wondering if it is possible that gabapentin can sometimes make neuropathy pain worse. The same review compared gabapentin to an inactive medicine (placebo) in almost 6,000 adults with chronic pain from PHN or diabetic neuropathy. Study participants were given either gabapentin or a placebo for 4 to at least 12 weeks. A study involving diabetic neuropathy patients showed that the combination of gabapentin and taurine significantly improved symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and temperature sensitivity compared to gabapentin alone. This combination also improved insulin sensitivity and overall neuropathy scores. Gabapentin's Impact on Numbness I started taking gabapentin for peripheral neuropathy almost a month ago. Over the last week my legs often go completely numb from the knee down. I can only assume it is the gabapentin. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal? Millions of people suffer from the burning, tingling, and numbness of a form of neuropathy called idiopathic sensory polyneuropathy. A recent study directly comparing four medications produced disappointing results, but is a step in the right direction. For diabetic neuropathy, one of the most common types affecting the feet, gabapentin's results are mixed. Some patients report significant pain reduction, while others experience little to no improvement. Some of the common initial side-effects are drowsiness and tiredness. This may be just temporary when starting gabapentin, and often goes away within a few days of being on gabapentin, but can occur every time an increase is made in the dose of gabapentin. Common conditions, such as post-herpetic neuralgia and painful diabetic neuropathy, are classified as chronic neuropathic pain and are associated with pain lasting longer than three months. Pharmaceutical therapies used to treat neuropathic pain include gabapentin, among others. Many people stay on gabapentin long-term and take it every day. Doctors often prescribe gabapentin off-label to treat conditions such as: pain from diabetic neuropathy, which is numbness or uncomfortable tingling caused by nerve damage from diabetes; nerve pain in the neck and back from conditions such as sciatica, a painful compression of the sciatic nerve It’s often used to treat neuropathic pain (nerve pain), numbness, pins and needles, or burning sensations known as paresthesia. Gabapentin may also be used to treat muscle spasms and nystagmus, which is an uncontrollable condition in which the eyes move back and forth rapidly. If your lab tests show no condition that's causing the neuropathy, your health care professional might recommend watchful waiting to see if your neuropathy stays the same or gets better. Medicines. Medicines can be used to treat conditions associated with peripheral neuropathy. There also are medicines used to improve peripheral neuropathy Peripheral neuropathy may affect the nerves controlling the automatic functions of the heart and circulation system (cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy). You may need treatment to increase your blood pressure or, in rare cases, a pacemaker. Find out more about complications of peripheral neuropathy. Different types of peripheral neuropathy Gabapentin is commonly used to treat neuropathic pain (pain due to nerve damage). This review updates a review published in 2014, and previous reviews published in 2011, 2005 and 2000. To assess the analgesic efficacy and adverse effects of Before I was diagnosed in 2016 or so one of my PCPs had started me on gabapentin but it didn't help the numbness so I stopped taking it only to find out later from the neurologist that there aren't any drugs that help with the numbness. I shared my neuropathy journey along with other members in another discussion here - Gabapentin is a valuable option for treating numbness and tingling associated with various neuropathic conditions. It is particularly effective for post-herpetic neuralgia and can improve symptoms in diabetic neuropathy when combined with taurine. So I just stopped taking it. I have read discussions between other members in one of the closed groups I belong to that were taking gabapentin and it was difficult to get off of it. By tapering slowly they were able to get off of the gabapentin. Gabapentin was made to treat seizures and not PN. Research supports the use of the anticonvulsants gabapentin (Gralise, Neurontin, Horizant) and pregabalin (Lyrica) to help relieve pain caused by damaged nerves. Both gabapentin and pregabalin are particularly effective in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy and pain caused by a spinal cord injury.
