Sixty-nine million Gabapentin prescriptions were dispensed in the United States last year, making it the seventh most commonly prescribed medication nationally. In Michigan, Gabapentin has been classified as a controlled substance since 2019, citing addiction issues. Gabapentin is not currently listed as a controlled substance under federal law. However, some states classify gabapentin as a Schedule V substance or a drug of concern and mandate reporting to PMP. Furthermore, other states are considering similar actions due to increasing evidence of associated risks. According to the federal government, gabapentin isn’t a controlled substance. But because its potential for misuse has become increasingly evident, some states (Kentucky being the first) have listed gabapentin as a Schedule V drug with the intent of restricting access and curtailing use without a prescription. But that’s not what happened. An updated revision to Michigan’s Pharmacy – Controlled Substance Rules includes the descheduling of Gabapentin effective immediately. This means that Gabapentin is no longer classified as a controlled substance in the state of Michigan. At the national level, gabapentin is not classified as a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This means it is not subject to the stringent regulations that apply to opioids or benzodiazepines, which are categorized based on their potential for abuse, medical use, and safety. , any new orders for Gabapentin issued by a practitioner WITHOUT a Utah.
