Why might gabapentin not be a suitable medication for my dog? Gabapentin might not be safe in dogs with kidney disease or dogs who are pregnant or lactating. In the meantime, though, a Banfield doctor had prescribed Gabapentin over the phone and I have been using it in hopes that it will keep her relatively stable (the emergency vet said that Gabapentin by itself is not very effective at treating seizures). The prescription is for 300 mg every 12 hours, and she is a 36 lb dog. He's going to start prozac daily which might lower and maybe the trazodone/gabapentin would work more in these situations? My dog was prescribed Gabapentin (every 8 hours) along with Trazodone (addressed in another comment on this reddit) for IVDD recovery. Not at first, but over the course of several days of taking Gabapentin, my dog began developing tremors. My dog has been on gabapentin a bunch for various surgeries and I've never experienced a problem or even side effect other than sleeping, which is normal. I just checked his dose, and it was 100mgs every 8-12 hours. Gabapentin has been demonstrated to be incredibly safe for both dogs and cats long term, as long as they do not have short-term side effects (within a few hours of administration). I use it for my cats when they go to the vets, move house, and used it when introducing them, but used pheromones and then gradually tapered the gabapentin dose.
