I have small fiber neuropathy. I tried gabapentin and lyrica with no effect on my pain - gabapentin makes me incredibly sleepy and puts me in a bad mood. I'm having trouble remembering if lyrica was much different. As you can see from this thread so far, it helps some people and doesn't help others - I had a bad experience, but I wouldn't rule I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I started taking gabapentin in 2016 after stabbing, fiery nerve pain post an L5/S1 fusion. It allowed me to get off of opioids which for me had worse side effects. Side effects for me on Gabapentin did not include any weight gain. It took almost 2 weeks after that before those mining explosions stopped. For me, I have to stay on gabapentin at this high dose and accept side effects. If you can do without gabapentin and you don't like side effects, do that. I do sleep better these last 5 years since I started gabapentin. Gabapentin is helpful to some people with specific pain problems as many in the comments are suggesting. However if you are getting TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) to treat depression and/or anxiety keep in mind gabapentin can actually reduce the efficacy of the treatment. What are your experiences with gabapentin? It's been over a year now and initially I did not have good experiences with it, but I feel like I'm seeing more positive comments lately. Toes and feet are numb yet extremely sensitive to touch and pain. Not gabapentin but pregabalin, which is apparently similar. Didn't do much for the pain, just made me so confused/slow/dizzy that it forced me to take it easy for months on end. I was so out of it, and still in pain, and really not capable of doing much in terms of physio/gentle exercise because I was so foggy all the time. Severe nerve pain here from cancer. Gabapentin with psych/depression meds was a freaking nightmare! Now-it DID help with pain if taken with 1 Advil. But not worth the neuro side effects with psych meds! Holy moley! That being said we are all different and what works for one doesn’t work for the other. I find specific strains of cannabis and suboxone to be the best combination so far. My doc was on holiday and I forgot to get my prescribtion, so I just taught why not, try to leave it for a few days. I got 3x 600mg a day because of neuropathic pain. Right now I sit here and got a prescription from a another doc and already took 2x 400 MG per 30 mins to taper up. i have been in gabapentin for a little over one month. the VA started me at 300 tid, then 400, then 600, and now i am at 800 tid. i have definitely gained some fat but i so stay very active and eat consciously. my pain and anxiety are definitely lower and my sleep has greatly improved. i was prescribed gabapentin to stay off alcohol and phenibut My doctor just prescribed me Gabapentin 300 mg 3x a day for neck pain. I’ve only been taking it once a day and I’ve slept somewhat better but otherwise been in more (maybe due to something else) or similar amounts of pain. I started on Gabapentin a few years ago when i had avascular necrosis. Not sure it did much for the pain but i was definitely relaxed. I've had fibromyalgia for years and pretty extreme sleep issues. I now take Gabapentin only before bed and have never had better sleep. Pregabalin (brand name Lyrica) helped much more to relieve pain & does not have those icky side effects. Same class drug though (anticonvulsants). I’ve been taking amitriptyline and Gabapentin for about 18 years. Very low dose amitriptyline at night only and 600 mg Gabapentin three times a day. I’ve only been without the Gabapentin a few times and it made me feel like I do when I don’t have my thyroid medication. The pain is from the inside out and created brain fog. A PA I saw yesterday while getting a second referral for Physical Therapy said to consider Gabapentin for managing my symptoms and after doing some research it looks like it might help me even my RN mother agreed that it could help me in my particular situation where I can do more things now but I still have pain and other symptoms like heavy ness and numbness. Nerve pain isn't caused by a gabapentin deficiency. Consider having your doctor test for things like B12 or folate deficiency, two of several nutrients that when repleted will help resolve nerve pain / neuropathy, instead of just covering it up.
