For some people, combining amitriptyline and gabapentin (Neurontin) may help relieve sciatic nerve pain further. But side effects are more likely to happen. Various forms of exercise and manual therapy can be helpful. Gabapentin is not approved or indicated for the treatment of back pain. It is an anti-convulsant (anti-epilepsy) drug that's also approved for post-operative pain; it's not approved for treating other types of back pain. Sciatica pain is not only horrible, it's totally distinctive. I've recently been prescribed Gabapentin, and have found it the only thing that's given some relief from the nerve pain. It's only pain relief though - doesn't heal whatever has gone wrong in your back. My doctor says sciatica usually settles in up to six weeks. Yes, I have. I take Gabapentin for back pain. I was also taking Cymbalta which I've been weaning off of slowly. I've had 2 surgeries. A decompression and disc replacement on my cervical spine and also a spinal fusion in my lumbar spine. I have back pain with most lifting activities that the Gabapentin helps with. I’m currently taking Gabapentin and have been for a few months and it has been incredibly helpful. I’m taking it with Tramadol and I feel ten times better than before. I have a very high tolerance so I never felt high but I will say the combo makes me SO hungry! I was on 1200 mg x 3 per day. It worked. It wiped out my sciatic nerve pain. It took 2 years to get to that dose, because my tolerance kept building over time. When I first started Gabapentin it would just make me sleep all the time. Eventually it had zero side effects at that high dose. Missing a dose did though. 10 votes, 14 comments. All of 2020 I have had sciatic pain due to my herniated disc. At first they gave me high dosage of naproxen which only dulled Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and systemic steroids should not be used in patients with sciatica. (SOR: A, based on a meta-analyses of RCTs.) Topiramate (Topamax) and pregabalin For Pain "I have severe sciatica in my right leg and horrible back pain due to two herniated discs, and severe spinal stenosis from an injury. I've seen 3 doctors and have tried everything out there. Today my doctor prescribed 300mg of gabapentin 3 times a day. 5 hours ago, I took the first one and AMAZING! I can feel the pain going away!" I had a S1-L5 fusion back in December. My sciatica had only ever been in my left side. A few weeks after surgery my right side flared up for the first time ever. Doc gave me a script for gabapentin and it helped out. Right side pain has completely gone away now. Gabapentin has worked for me with none of the side effects others have mentioned. I take 300mg once a day at bedtime and this has made it so that I can take my daily walks without pain as well as focus on my physical therapy. My question is, how long do I stay on the medicine? I do sometimes “feel” my low back but it no longer hurts. Has anyone here tried Gabapentin for their sciatica and what where your results? I recently started Gabapentin (300mg, 3x daily) for sciatica in left leg due to pressure on nerve root from protrusion at L5-S1. My pain doc prescribed it as a stopgap until I get an epidural. I started Gabapentin to help with pain from L4/L5/S1 bulges. I’ve been managing the injury for more than a decade but in the last 2 months I have been in constant pain that has majorly interfered with my life. Also am going to try injections, although I did a long time ago for upper back pain and don’t remember it helping. Talk of lumbar fusion surgery came up. Anyway, my mom has sciatica and was prescribed gabapentin and it made her have horrible dreams and suicidal thoughts. She quit immediately. I have two herniated disks in my lower lumbar, the pain from my sciatic nerve travels down both legs and I'm rapidly losing feeling and strength in all of my toes and feet. This happens to this extent twice a year.. I take gabapentin and I feel enough relief to stand for more than five mins. The typical starting dose of gabapentin for sciatic nerve pain for most patients is 300mg once a day. Your physician may increase the dosage up to three times a day. Those are possible side-effects, not guaranteed ones. I have quite severe sciatica from a damaged nerve and take 3 x 2 Zapain (30mg codeine phosphate + 500mg paracetamol) AND 3 x 3 300mg Gabapentin to counteract the pain. Currently, I am dealing with an episode of sciatica that is pretty terrible without taking naproxen (500mg/day) and also gabapentin (300 mg daily taken at night) for 5 weeks or so. Functioning at work, doing chores, and driving is pretty hard without it.
