I know this is an old post but I was wondering if you could give me an update on your cat? We found a stray who was extremely underweight and needed to have her eye removed from an injury. She has terrible separation anxiety and my other 2 cats and her fight when we have tried introductions. I assume her eye injuries were from other cats. Gabapentin is an excellent option in managing anxiety when previous therapies alone have proven to be insufficient. It may be used situationally, prior to predictable stressful events, or administered daily in combination with an SSRI or TCA. Trazodone is often used to treat anxiety disorders, such as separation anxiety, in dogs, while gabapentin is commonly used to manage pain and seizures. For dogs with anxiety disorders, trazodone can be more effective in reducing anxiety, but gabapentin may be a better choice for long-term treatment due to fewer side effects. In dogs with osteoarthritis, gabapentin was over 50% more effective than placebo for pain management. For separation anxiety, gabapentin reduced signs by 50-75% in most dogs, according to clinical research. Studies report success rates of 60-80% for using gabapentin to ease travel anxiety and noise phobias in dogs. The addition of gabapentin to a dog’s anti-anxiety medication may improve its effect without an increase of its dosage. Gabapentin has gained popularity in leaps and bounds (hey! that’s what we’re going for: leaping and bounding dogs!) for its potential contribution to pain management in veterinary medicine. Can’t speak for how your dog will react to gabapentin, but a lot of separation anxiety medicating/training is dog dependent. My dog goes to a veterinary behaviorist for his anxiety (general and separation). He’s 50lbs and gets 600mg gaba twice a day, 40mg fluoxetine once a day and 300mg trazodone as needed for departures.
