I started on a very low dose of 100mg (This was fine, no side effects). When I increased to 300mg I had very bad dizziness so had to stop. Not everyone has side effects, these drugs seem to affect everyone differently. Mumsnet makes parents' lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers. My question is, I was prescribled Carbamepazine originally and had an allergic reaction within 3 weeks so was put on Gabapentin. I'm taking 1600mg a day at present and can go up to 2700mg a day. My memory seems to be suffering and I get various other side effects such as vertigo. Liberla has side effects to, as do all medicines. There is no one solution for every dog with arthritis it is matter working out the best solution with your vet. If you are really uncertain it could be worth having a referral to a specialist pain clinic who do a really in depth holistic look and the dog and it's lifestyle as well as drug options. Its good to hear that people aren't having side effects - I can do without anything else going wrong as about the only thing that has gone right medically is the botox for my only working finger (bloody magic that - went to sleep with finger at right angle to hand, woke up with it in the right place). I have had trouble with taking drugs, allergic to morphine have bowel problems that are life long so always have to avoid anything that can aggravate t I was able to take gabapentin without the spacey/drunk side effects. Started on 100mg three times a day, raising my dose every 2 weeks until I got relief from my TN. I'm now on 3x600mg a day. There are similar antiepileptics to try that could bring relief. And just because the gabapentin didn't suit doesn't mean they all won't. I have read some alarming side effects and I am now very nervous about starting it. I have been given a sick note to cover next week to help me adjust to this and while I am still in pain, so I do have time to work through some of the side effects. Some side effects of gabapentin may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. The most common gabapentin (Neurontin) side effects are dizziness and drowsiness. This may affect your ability to drive or perform other activities. Other gabapentin side effects include edema (fluid buildup), weight gain, and eye problems, but these aren’t as common. I talked to my neurologist several times and got told it's not the gabapentin and "we've never heard of this. it's supposed to eliminate tremors and twitching." I was offered it for facial neuralgia, but my consultant said the side effects were severe, and that he had been on it for shingles and hated it. I decided not to take it, but can request it in future if I change my mind. It took almost 2 weeks after that before those mining explosions stopped. For me, I have to stay on gabapentin at this high dose and accept side effects. If you can do without gabapentin and you don't like side effects, do that. I do sleep better these last 5 years since I started gabapentin. My old boy has had 2 librela injections and is due his 3rd soon. I'm not sure whether to go for it or try gabapentin tbh. His mobility was noticeably better within 24 hours and has remained at the same level. But after his 2nd injection he started pacing and staring and I'm worried about side effects and that he was distressed. Mumsnet makes parents' lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers. It made excruciating pain from a compressed nerve bearable. Reading up on the side effects stopped me getting the prescription for several months. angry not sure yet, only prescribed today, but GP thinks this much more likely to help than the gabapentin with less side effects. I could not function on gabapentin, although I was told the side effects took 6wks+ to wear off, I just could not manage them until that happened and decided to accept the pain. I am trying to find a happy medium. My DD10 takes gabapentin and pizotifen for nerve damage in her gut. It definitely left her spaced out and sleepy until her body got used to it. She has now been on it for 1 yr with no side effects. It definitely helps her pain levels. I worried about her taking because of the possible side effects but it really has helped her. Anyone on it and can tell me what side effects they had and did they last? Feel like a have a choice between feeling pain or feeling sick at the moment, and it's hobson's choice! I used it for a few months when I had sciatic nerve pain in my hip. I found it marvelous, it really helped. I'm due to start gabapentin today. For nerve pain and chronic sickness after chemotherapy. I had no idea it could be used for digestion but my stomach rejects food completely after chemo so it's a slow and steady journey to get me eating again after being on a liquid diet mostly for so long and they've prescribed me gabapentin for that and also nerve pain in my hands and arms and restless legs
