WHAT GABAPENTIN CAPSULES ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE USED FOR. An unusual or allergic reaction to gabapentin, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives; Pregnant or trying to get pregnant; Breast-feeding; How should I use this medication? Take this medication by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take this medication with your evening meal. Gabapentin is available as Gralise, Neurontin, and generic gabapentin in the following dosage forms that are taken by mouth. 100 mg, 300 mg, 400 mg oral capsules 250 mg/5 mL oral solution Gabapentin works in the brain to prevent seizures and relieve pain for certain conditions in the nervous system. It is not used for routine pain caused by minor injuries or arthritis. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant. GABAPENTIN (Gabapentin Tablets) Page 2 of 37 RECENT MAJOR LABEL CHANGES 7 WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS, Dependence/Tolerance 12-2023 7.1 Special Populations, 7.1.1 Pregnant Women, Neonatal withdrawal syndrome 12-2023 Gabapentin is a prescription medicine used to treat: • Pain from damaged nerves (postherpetic pain) that follows healing of shingles (a painful rash that comes after a herpes zoster infection) in adults. Talk to your doctor before stopping the drug. Your dose may need to be slowly reduced. Combining any of these drugs with alcohol or other depressants (including antihistamines, narcotics and some dental anesthetics) can make side effects more severe. Gabapentin is a prescription medicine. It's important to take it as advised by your doctor. Each capsule of gabapentin contains 100mg, 300mg or 400mg of gabapentin. Each tablet contains 600mg or 800mg of gabapentin. If you're taking gabapentin as a liquid, 2ml is usually the same as taking a 100mg tablet or capsule. Always check the label. Gabapentin extended-release tablets (Horizant) are used to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS; a condition that causes discomfort in the legs and a strong urge to move the legs, especially at night and when sitting or lying down). Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Known hypersensitivity to gabapentin or its ingredients (4) -----WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS----- Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (Multiorgan hypersensitivity): Discontinue if alternative etiology is not established (5.1) Anaphylaxis and Angioedema: Discontinue and evaluate patient Follow all instructions closely. All products: Keep taking this drug as you have been told by your doctor or other health care provider, even if you feel well. If you are taking an antacid that has aluminum or magnesium in it, take this drug at least 2 hours after taking the antacid. Gralise: Take with the evening meal. Swallow whole. Why have I been prescribed Gabapentin? • Gabapentin is used to treat some types of persistent pain. • It is especially good for nerve pain, such as burning, shooting or stabbing pain. • Gabapentin belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants which are also used to treat epilepsy. Gabapentin tablets are a prescription medicine used to treat: Who should not take gabapentin tablets? Do not take gabapentin tablets if you are allergic to gabapentin or any of the other ingredients in gabapentin Timing: Take gabapentin at the same times each day. You can take gabapentin with or without food. Try taking it with food if it makes you feel sick (nauseous). Swallow the capsules whole, with a glass of water: If you have problems swallowing the capsule, you can open it and mix the contents with apple sauce or orange juice, just before taking it. If you think you've used an extra pill call your doctor for advice. For a larger overdose, call your local poison control center or emergency room right away, unless you have special instructions from the doctor. What are the brand names of gabapentin? Gabapentin is available as both a brand name product and a generic product (chemically the same, usually lower cost than the brand name product). Brand names of gabapentin include Horizant®, Gralise® and Neurontin®. Take gabapentin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Never take gabapentin in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed.
