Antidepressants help to relieve symptoms of depression such as low mood, irritability, feelings of worthlessness, restlessness, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. Antidepressants are classified into types depending on their structure and their effect on the body. There are at least seven categories of antidepressants. Evidence does not support the use of gabapentin for bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), stimulant use disorder, or opioid withdrawal. Some people use these treatments instead of drugs, and some use them as an add-on treatment to their antidepressant medication. St. John’s wort is an herb that some people have tried for depression. Medicine options to treat depression include SSRIs, SNRIs, atypical antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs and other drugs. Even though gabapentin is an anticonvulsant traditionally used to help treat epilepsy and other causes of seizures, recent studies show that prescribing it as a treatment for depression, as mood stabilizer, or to help with neuropathic pain may also be quite effective due to its ability to calm neurons in the brain. Some drugs that were first used to treat schizophrenia, called atypical antipsychotics, may also help certain kinds of depression, either alone or in combination with more traditional antidepressants. Gabapentin is primarily an anticonvulsant medication, yet its association with psychiatric side effects, including depression, has garnered attention. While classified as serious but uncommon, reports indicate that depression can be exacerbated in individuals with a history of psychological issues. Today, antidepressants are one of the most frequently prescribed medications in the United States. What conditions do antidepressants help treat? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of antidepressants for the following conditions: Clinical depression and other depressive disorders (most common use of antidepressants). A meta-analysis suggests that the relationship between antidepressant use and suicidal behavior or thoughts is age-dependent. While gabapentin isn’t typically used as a standalone treatment for depression, some studies suggest it may have a role as an adjunct therapy, particularly in bipolar disorder. It’s like adding a secret ingredient to a recipe – it might not be the main component, but it can enhance the overall effect. Gabapentin is usually prescribed at a low dose to start but can be gradually increased as needed. While a psychiatric provider will likely not prescribe gabapentin for anxiety or depression as a first course of action, it may be used alongside other treatments to help improve symptoms.
