In recent years, veterinary medicine has made great strides in the treatment of chronic pain in cats. Twenty-plus years ago, painful procedures were performed with chemical restraint alone and without consideration of analgesia or the patient’s pain level. Pregabalin oral solution (Bonqat; Zoetis) is now available to veterinary clinics throughout the US and can be obtained by cat owners with a prescription from a veterinarian. 1. Pregabalin oral solution is indicated for the alleviation of feline acute anxiety and fear associated with transportation and veterinary visits. There’s a new treatment option for acute anxiety and fear in cats. From the pharmacology to adverse effects, get the facts about recently-approved pregabalin. Currently, no pharmacokinetic data exist for pregabalin administered to cats. Prior to recommending pregabalin as an anticonvulsant in cats with seizure disorders, doses and dosing frequency need to be determined. Therefore, we evaluated the pharmacokinetic profile of single-dose oral pregabalin administration in healthy cats. Several studies evaluated the clinical effect of gabapentin in dogs and cats with mixed results. It is difficult to compare studies as they used different protocols of administration and doses. ANIMALS While gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) share many similarities, there are a few things that set them apart.
