I’m managing fairly well. Still tapering veeery slowly, about 10% month and now at about 45mg. Withdrawal symptoms are persistent but clonidine and cyproheptadine have been game changers. I currently work full time and I’m in a full time PhD program, so I’m living life despite the withdrawals. I had been on Gabapentin for 3 years starting at 900mg and ramping up to the 2700mg in January and I decided I wanted to try something else. The only problem for me was increased pain in the last week, which I fully expected. I did not notice any withdrawal effects, so everyone's experience is different because for some, it's hard. Congratulations. That sounds truly awful. I am one of those annoying patients that doesn't get withdrawal symptoms from gabapentin, but I haven't told the Doctors. Promise. I also don't have withdrawal symptoms from benzos, which is even luckier and seems very unusual. The opioid withdrawals definitely get me though, hard and very fast. Welcome to /r/gabapentin, here we primarily discuss issues pertaining to the medical, prescribed use of Gabapentin, Lyrica and Phenibut, as well as other Gaba related drugs. This IS NOT the subreddit for discussion of how to get high or otherwise abuse GP. I have been taking Gabapentin at 900mg for four years. I have begun tapering off of it. I am currently at 700mg. Of course it’s a nightmare. This is what I have been using to try and make it more tolerable. Kava - Don’t use it, i feel like the serotonin boost during withdrawal made me really, really sick. DL Phenylalanine. Controversial but Fortunately, I found all the posts on Reddit about gabapentin withdrawal and told my doctor there was no way I would take that unless I was desperate. Fast forward almost a year, and unfortunately, out of nowhere my pain just started going bonkers, and so I became desperate about 2 months ago and had to begin using gabapentin. It causes intense oxidation strain and can cause nephritis. People have even died from Neurontin. Also you can see from this FDA guide that tolerance tends to sky rocket pretty high fast too. Yes, Neurontin works wonders for withdrawal of all sorts- including opes, benzos, and alcohol withdrawal. The withdrawal syndrome is heavily underreported in medical literature and because the average user will never experience it, many doctors believe that Gabapentin withdrawal simply doesn't exist. It does. I used Gabapentin to help get through alcohol withdrawal. I used it for 4 days with the following doses. Day 1 1800, Day 2 1800, Day 3 900 and 300 the morning of day 4 (yesterday). Case reports have shown that gabapentin withdrawal often lasts for 5 to 10 days, but some people have taken as long as 18 weeks to completely taper off gabapentin while managing withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms may start within 12 hours to 7 days after stopping gabapentin and may be severe. My plan was to write about my extremely painful and unexpected withdrawal experience after I felt better, but it has been FIFTEEN months. I was on 1800-3600 mg /day for 20 years. My physician put me on a six day weaning schedule. If you get the right dose of Gabapentin in you, you can eliminate your Akathisia completely. I'm including a link to a guide for the administration of Gabapentin. Read over it and make sure you know what you're doing, because it can easily be wasted. Good luck. Just experienced 4 days of gabapentin withdrawal. It was hell. My doc was on holiday and I forgot to get my prescribtion, so I just taught why not, try to leave it for a few days. Just got back from the ER for what turned out to be Gabapentin withdrawal! I’m a recovering addict and was prescribed 300mg Gabapentin 4x a day. I would take a little bit more than needed on some days but mostly just followed doctor’s orders. Been on them for 6 months. I have been taking Gabapentin recreationally on a daily basis. Should I expect withdrawal if I stop. Taking about 3800mg daily combined with about I remember when I was first prescribed gabapentin, doctors had a hard-line stance that it did not cause withdrawal. Same was true for benzos 10 years prior to that. Do not trust your doctor, they are going off of a clinical trial that was likely falsified to get the drug approved, and no trial would go long enough to discover physical The way I do it to avoid withdrawal is to go down by 100mg each week. Gabapentin has a horrendously long half life, so it takes something like 36 hrs to 3 days to start feeling the withdrawal, so the 100mg step down over 7-10 days has been key for me. Sometimes I can go down faster if I’ve been at higher doses for only a day or two. First lets clarify there is indeed a withdrawal with gabapentin. The withdrawal will resemble a benzo / alcohol withdrawal in many ways. Its also NOT a gaba A or B agonist, so its unlikely benzos will help much. Gabapentin withdrawal can begin within 12 hours and last up to 7 days. As of 2023, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has not classified gabapentin as a controlled substance because experts have always believed it showed little potential for abuse or dependence. Unfortunately, even with all the meds in the world, there is really no way to completely stop/ avoid gabapentin withdrawal. Even tapering slowly after being on a decent enough dose for a decent enough length of time is going to cause a bit of discomfort.
