I just had to give my kitty liquid gabapentin for the first time a few weeks ago and our first few times were traumatic. Slowing down and staying calm made it much better. Wrap them in the towel, pet them, talk calmly, offer a treat, pet them some more, then take the syringe and gently put it in the side of their mouth. We give our cat gabapentin mixed with a treat in a liquid/cream form. We will do the full dose of gabapentin in her bowl, mix in half of her treat, let her eat it. She won’t eat all of it but will eat about 75% of it. Then we mix in the rest of her treat with whatever she didn’t eat and she will eat it all. I can't give more than 20-25 mg (I have liquid version now which is 250mg/5mL concentration which divides out to 50mg per 1 mL so I usually try to give 0.35-0.4 mL) for my 8-9lb cat. 20-25 mg seems to be the most effective dose to relieve his anxiety but still allow him to function (litterbox, walk around/watch birds). My cat has been on pills & liquid. The liquid was faster because you just squirt it and they normally swallow it based on reflexes. For the pills, I hold her from the back and front while opening her mouth with one hand, drop the pill as far back as you can and close her mouth gently. Gabapentin also comes in a 50mg/ml liquid form that does require refrigeration. The commercial liquid form may contain the artificial sweetener xylitol. While not toxic to cats, xylitol is toxic to dogs, so be careful with this form if there’s a pup in your home. The vet advised giving 1cc of liquid gabapentin mixed in wet food the night before and the morning of a vet visit. This appears to be a 50 mg dose each time.
