It affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. Neurontin is used in adults to treat neuropathic pain (nerve pain) caused by herpes virus or shingles (herpes zoster). Gabapentin (Neurontin and associated names) has been approved in several Member States for the treatment of epileptic syndromes and several types of neuropathic pain. The precise mechanism of action of gabapentin is not known. Gabapentin is structurally related to the neurotransmitter GABA (gammaaminobutyric acid) and interacts with GABA synapses.
