Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant) is a medicine used to help manage certain epileptic seizures. It also is used to relieve pain for some conditions, such as shingles. Dizziness and drowsiness are common side effects of gabapentin. Some other possible side effects include weight gain and trouble with movement. Medicines available without a prescription, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can improve mild symptoms. Anti-seizure medicines. Medicines such as gabapentin (Gralise, Neurontin, Horizant) and pregabalin (Lyrica), developed to treat epilepsy, often improve nerve pain. Side effects can include drowsiness and dizziness. Hi @gabataper while you wait to hear from @margaretbob @guener @njp1013 and others, I wanted to take a minute and welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. You mentioned that you are currently taking gabapentin for back pain. Research supports the use of the anticonvulsants gabapentin (Gralise, Neurontin, Horizant) and pregabalin (Lyrica) to help relieve pain caused by damaged nerves. Both gabapentin and pregabalin are particularly effective in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy and pain caused by a spinal cord injury. Gabapentin is an antiepileptic drug that is effective in treating seizures, neuropathies, and a variety of neurological and psychological maladies. Although designed as a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogue, gabapentin does not bind to GABA receptors, nor does it affect the neuronal uptake or degradation of GABA. It took almost 2 weeks after that before those mining explosions stopped. For me, I have to stay on gabapentin at this high dose and accept side effects. If you can do without gabapentin and you don't like side effects, do that. I do sleep better these last 5 years since I started gabapentin. Gabapentin and Neurontin are the same medication. Gabapentin is the chemical/generic name for Neurontin. If your asking if other pain or other medications can be taken with gabapentin then I did, but were prescribed by my doctor. I took various opiods including Fentanyl. Thank you I really appreciate your question I have type 2 diabetes also have degenerative disc and back problems I have sciatica and legner pain and my feet burn from neuropathy I don't know the difference between the two drugs either I only have been on gabapentin and it seems to be not working quite as well even though the dose is much higher I take 600 mg three times a day my doctor I started taking gabapentin in 2016 after stabbing, fiery nerve pain post an L5/S1 fusion. It allowed me to get off of opioids which for me had worse side effects. I was started on Neurontin in 1999 for Fibro and once I became intolerant of it moved to Lyrica. I now take 50 in the morning and 50 at night if the pain is bad. I did take 100 x a day, but as I can gotten much older, I need less ( now age 76, diagnosed at age 43). I called Mayo to get more info and they said I have to stop my gabapentin for 48 hours prior to the tests and I can't take tylenol, or my aspirin (for blood thinner) or even my sleeping pill for 48 hours either. Gabapentin enacarbil is used to treat moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). RLS is a neurologic disorder that makes the legs feel uncomfortable. This results in an irresistible feeling of wanting to move your legs to make them comfortable. Gabapentin is a medication that treats nerve pain by calming overactive nerves in your body. It may also prevent and control seizures in people with epilepsy. You can take this medication by mouth with a glass of water. Mike Hooten, M.D. (Anesthesiology, Mayo Clinic): The evidence is not all that clear about the efficacy of those drugs long-term for chronic pain. Vivien Williams: Mayo Clinic pain management specialist Dr. Mike Hooten says what is clear about these painkillers is the risk associated with taking them. Gabapentin is used to help control partial seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy. This medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. Gabapentin is also used to manage a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain that occurs after shingles. What I learned from the podcast is that the PN research in the past was very challenging with many ups and downs. At one point there was a movement to look at the pain caused by PN and it was found that gabapentin and gabapentinoids help with the pain. Hello @cwallen9, here are some articles on gabapentin and it's use to treat tinniitis. Also, Mayo Clinic has some information on the symptoms and causes. Interesting that it is used to treat tinnitis but also may be a cause. Gabapentin is a nonlinear drug used for Focal Aware & Focal Impaired and bilateral Tonic Clonic Seizures. It’s probably now more often used for various nerve pain than seizures, just a guess really. Is it helping your problem? I took the max dose of 3600mg. Hello, @guener I don’t know if I can share anything to help you, specifically, but I will try. My neurologist started me on gabapentin, 300 mg 3 times a day. After tracking my experience so I could give valid feedback, he changed the dosage to 300 mg in the a.m. and 300x3 or 900 mg at bedtime.
