Hi everyone, I'm traveling with two of my cats. We have a non-stop flight (IAH - LAX). My cats are rescues (well they rescued me), and they're So my kitty (2.5) has gabapentin for anxiety. She managed to take it twice before she figured out either a smell or a texture of it. She will absolutely not eat anything that I have put gabapentin in. I have mixed it in with treats (churu, the only tube treat she likes), wet food, I tried putting it in a pill pouch, nothing works. TDLR: 5 year old cat had restlessness, no sleeping, anxiety, inappetence, frequent litter box trips (with eventual output) after Zorbium. It took 6 days to get fully back to normal. Important to note, the same cat has had the oral form of Buprenorphine and had none of these symptoms (but he was also on Gabapentin (sedative) at the same time). A dental veterinarian prescribed transdermal gabapentin for my cat following cryosurgery. She also told me to contact my regular vet if I had any problems before the next cryotherapy procedure in a month. The authors of this study concluded that transdermal application of gabapentin in a lipoderm base is able to attain therapeutic blood levels and reduce pain scores in treated cats. There were several limitations to this study. My cat has been on liquid Fluoxatine for 2 years because he was peeing on my bed and the couch almost daily. It helped a lot. The only thing I don't like is that it can make him constipated and retain urine. He goes pee and poo once every 23hrs. Sounds nicer in terms of cleaning the cat box, but sometimes he has a hard time passing his stool. Gabapentin Dosage for Cats. The dosage for gabapentin may vary depending on a cat’s size, as well as whether it’s being used as a pain medication, as part of seizure management, or as a sedative before vet visits or travel. From a safety perspective, a gabapentin dosage for cats will typically not exceed 50-100mg per cat to address pain or She is prescribing transdermal gebapentin (to put in her ear flap). Has anyone used this and has it worked? Am I terrible for being more stressed about getting her into her carrier and to the doctor than I am about the actual appointment? 31 votes, 14 comments. 288K subscribers in the cat community. Welcome to r/cat, the subreddit for anything cat related! ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ Is there any consensus on the relative efficacy of transdermal vs. oral gabapentin? I want my cat to benefit from the medication, but it's impossible for me to know which doctor is correct here about the best formulation. I have a kitty who is currently on 25mg of Gabapentin every 12 hours. I’m a vet tech and the dr I work with, who is my cat’s vet, gave us liquid gaba, since the smallest capsule dose is 100mg and it would be very difficult to divvy that up into 4 doses accurately. However, my cat DESPISES the liquid gaba. We stopped the gabapentin and she's 3 applications in on the buprenex/zorbium, but if anything she seems worse. Hiding, gagging, won't eat. At least on the gabapentin she was eating. We're applying a .3mg dose to the inside of the ear. I'm worried I'm not applying it correctly, seeing as everyone's cats seem to have a definite reaction to this Getting Gabapentin into my cat! I have been using gabapentin for vet visits for my girl, Molly, but I have exhausted all the ways I've gotten her to take it and am hoping for some suggestions. As background, she's 11 and a rescue who has been with me for 7 years. Experience giving Gabapentin transdermal (ear) with cat? Hi, We have a very intelligent Norwegian Forest kitty that knows what you’re thinking and will not take gabapentin orally/mixed with tuna juice/treats/liquid all the tactics. So glad I found this post because now we know the timeline for this to wear off. I already knew my cat’s post surgery behavior is related to this drug (she was prescribed a much smaller dose in the past for a uti) and our vet confirmed it. Our 15 year old cat had her last two teeth removed yesterday and hasn’t eaten, had water, or slept since. Has anyone used transdermal gabapentin? If so, did it work well. I’ve only used liquid and pill but I think transdermal may be less stressful for all of us. Nobody's responded to this post yet. Add your thoughts and get the conversation going. In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education podcast, we review the use of transdermal gabapentin in cats. I suspect many of you agree that giving gabapentin to fractious kitties prior to veterinary appointments has been an absolute game changer! Administration of oral gabapentin in cats can be challenging for some owners. Discover if transdermal gabapentin shows promise in this pilot study. I give the pill to my cat twice a day (he actually gets a variety of pills 3 times a day, methimazole is the smallest one). In my experience, older cats are usually pretty easy to pill. I would recommend maybe giving it a month or two with the pill and seeing if it is sustainable or if your cat fights you tooth and nail every time. I have a cat who absolutely refuses all oral meds, so we’ve now switched to getting his gabapentin compounded into a transdermal gel that goes onto the ear pinna instead - he’s still dramatic about it but it’s way easier so that may be an option for you if the capsules don’t work - my cat wouldn’t eat the food with the granules mixed
