I’ve been struggling with my depression again this season and my dr prescribed gabapentin for my morning anxiety. She told me to take 1 before bed and 1 when I wake up. The next day, I felt pretty good. Almost too good. I felt like I couldn’t sit still and I wasn’t myself. Has anyone had that happen? And that quickly after taking it? It makes me focus and that a huge help because I refuse to take stimulants because they race my heart and the come down is horrible. Gabapentin puts me in a really great mood and I’m able to have to energy to do things around the house that has been put off because of my carpal tunnel and I’m not sure yet what else. Safe Use Of Gabapentin It should be noted that the studied medicinal dose range of gabapentin is quite large. Gabapentin has been used effectively in doses all the way up to 3,600 mg per day for neuropathic symptoms (although this is an off-label use). The more common dosage range is between 600 mg and 1,800 mg per day. Gabapentin (Neurontin) has FDA approval to treat epilepsy and nerve pain after a shingles attack (postherpetic neuralgia). Doctors do prescribe it off-label for many other conditions, though. Side effects include weakness, fatigue, sleepiness, dizziness and depression. I'd say the neurontin has been helpful for sure and I don't feel I have any side effects. I'm now taking 600mg TID. I can always go down if needed. I do think it's helped with social anxiety and I feel relaxed but also clearheaded which is quite nice. I don't feel foggy. Zoloft, for me, does the heave lifting and always will. I asked the vet if I should give my dog a gabapentin to calm her down before the appointment. She said no- they don’t prescribe gabapentin for dogs, only for cats. I was surprised, but it fits what everyone is saying here. One of my hypothesis is that due to a similar paradoxical effect with medical opioids' ability to give energy when the patient is finally medicated enough to provide relief from the massive weight that is whatever reason the they were on it for. Gabapentin is amazing for certain types of pain, so it should be able to cause something similar. One of my patients has to have his mom drive him because of low energy and sleepiness side effects he gets from gabapentin. I'm not a psychiatrist, just a TMS tech, but most of our onsite MDs and psychiatrists recommend weaning off it if it is possible to reduce the risk of treatment not being as effective as it could be. The 300 mg gives me enough focus, energy, all while feeling calm, throughout the day to do things. I sometimes feel tired but my executive function and focus is pretty good. All while not feeling any increased anxiety. It is very hard when I miss a dose though—hence why I have been considering trying to taper off. My vet regularly prescribes 300mg for two of my particularly skittish cats before any in-person visits. Although I can understand your husband’s fears (I remember being really worried myself the very first time, and actually didn’t listen to the vet and split the 300mg dose into 50mg doses, and gave one 50mg dose to one of my cats that time - it didn’t do anything for my kitty), your vet
