My doggo passed away 6 months ago at almost 18 y.o., she had dementia for 2 years. Gabapentin and CBD oil helped her sleep comfortably at night. Ask your vet about Selegiline, my pup had side effects so we had to stop it, but most dogs benefit greatly from it and their cognitive function can improve. I'm curious about other people's experiences or reactions to taking Gabapentin. Every case is unique, also not sure what dosage will be yet. Nobody's responded to this post yet. Two nights ago we tried melatonin for because everything else we tried, gabapentin, Xanax, Klonopin, Benadryl, trazodone, were not tolerated at all and she was in hysterics for hours. My Dog2 was given Gabapentin when she had pancreatitis and it had horrible side effects on her, like you, I ended up googling rare side effects of Gabapentin and when I had her switched to a different pain med, then she started to recover. For humans, sudden onset of dementia (or the appearance of it) can be caused by a bladder infection! Where I come from the medication is called selegilin. I give it to my cat with dementia, but the medicine is better for dogs (more studies done on dogs). She also gets gabapentin for her old cat pains and her anxiety (comes with dementia) and it works really well for that. My mom has taken gabapentin and it made her sleepy as well. That being said, half the reason I'm prescribed gabapentin is for my anxious overthinking so any kind of slowing is a relief.
