My doggo passed away 6 months ago at almost 18 y.o., she had dementia for 2 years. Gabapentin and CBD oil helped her sleep comfortably at night. Ask your vet about Selegiline, my pup had side effects so we had to stop it, but most dogs benefit greatly from it and their cognitive function can improve. I'm curious about other people's experiences or reactions to taking Gabapentin. Every case is unique, also not sure what dosage will be yet. Nobody's responded to this post yet. Add your thoughts and get the conversation going. Our dog basically goes wild and his uncontrollable all while crying and very distressing pitches and tones. Two nights ago we tried melatonin for because everything else we tried, gabapentin, Xanax, Klonopin, Benadryl, trazodone, were not tolerated at all and she was in hysterics for hours. My Dog2 was given Gabapentin when she had pancreatitis and it had horrible side effects on her, like you, I ended up googling rare side effects of Gabapentin and when I had her switched to a different pain med, then she started to recover. For humans, sudden onset of dementia (or the appearance of it) can be caused by a bladder infection! Where I come from the medication is called selegilin. I give it to my cat with dementia, but the medicine is better for dogs (more studies done on dogs). She also gets gabapentin for her old cat pains and her anxiety (comes with dementia) and it works really well for that. My mom has taken gabapentin and it made her sleepy as well. For your partner, could be a combination of both. I'm sorry for what you're going through. We got the official diagnosis for my dad a few years ago, but we suspect that he may have been showing signs almost a decade ago. In humans, gabapentin is known to create a decline in cognitive function (dementia) that may improve when the gabapentin is removed and an alternative pain relief is given. However, after 16 years, your little love bunny is already a fair age and excessive sleeping is also commonly seen in older dogs. Gabapentin is principally prescribed for controlling epilepsy through controlling the electrical activity in the brain, but can also be used to help with neuropathic pain. Perhaps it is the effect it is having on your wife's brain's electrical activity which is bringing these beneficial "side effects" of improving her dementia symptoms. Gabapentin should work within hours of taking it. And in the case of you not knowing yet what the issue is, gabapentin is also used to help relieve anxiety in animals. It is considered safe for long term use which is why it is one of the most common pain relievers prescribed (in humans, dogs, cats, etc) Gabapentin is an inhibitor of GABA, a Neurotransmitter. So when you think about it, it’s job is to inhibit the Neurotransmission of pain signals from receptors to the brain, and that’s how it helps reduce nerve pain. Two common classes of drugs have been linked to dementia. Fortunately, there are alternatives to both. If you're worried about developing dementia, you've probably memorized the list of things you should do to minimize your risk—eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep, and keeping your mind and soul engaged. You might find your dog sleeps more, or is a little less receptive / needy of your touch. She has been on gabapentin for several years now - and aside from her age and her mashed potato brains, she is a happy, healthy dog. Recently a Danish group tried to get around that by removing patients from their study who developed dementia within the first two years of starting the benzo, as those were more likely to be cases where early signs of dementia were misdiagnosed as anxiety or depression. does gabapentin cause dementia? Nobody's responded to this post yet. Add your thoughts and get the conversation going. That being said, half the reason I'm prescribed gabapentin is for my anxious overthinking so any kind of slowing is a relief. It's possible I wouldn't notice things in the same way as someone who has it for different reasons/symptoms. I'm currently prescribed 300 mg 3x a day for anxiety/panic, bipolar and pain. The results revealed that the risk of dementia associated with gabapentin or pregabalin exposure was significant in all subgroups except for the strata having depression or head injury. The risk of dementia development was higher in the younger group (age <50 years) than that in the older group. I recently started caregiving for my 83 year old MIL. She has advanced Alzheimer's, and during the day, she wants to "get out of here." Most of the time, she is okay, but whenever she gets like this, it's heartbreaking. Is Gabapentin ever prescribed for anxiety for people with Alzheimer's? I've been off the med since July, and I still have memory issues. Finding words, remembering names, movies, foods, Dr 's, places, etc I had a lot of side effects I chalked up to aging (43f). It's been 5 months, with only slight improvement. I think time is the only healer, unfortunately 🫂. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us.
