We currently have a large amount of 300mg caps of gabapentin from a failed treatment for a different dog (prescribed in Sep 2021). I am wondering if it is worth attempting to ask out vet about using this gabapentin to help our dog manage his aggression/anxiety. My dog tried gabapentin for anti-anxiety and also for his neuter before, but he was still so hyper and I saw absolutely no difference in his behavior, and he was taking 300mg dosage. Is this common or has anyone else’s dog not reacted to Gabapentin? One common combination is trazodone and gabapentin to treat anxiety, which is also available as a pre-blended option in a single pill. Gabapentin is an excellent option in managing anxiety when previous therapies alone have proven to be insufficient. To use Gabapentin for anxiety, it’s typically given 1-2 hours before the anxiety-inducing event. Where I come from the medication is called selegilin. I give it to my cat with dementia, but the medicine is better for dogs (more studies done on dogs). She also gets gabapentin for her old cat pains and her anxiety (comes with dementia) and it works really well for that. My 85# pittie takes 300 mg 2x per day, more for pain but it has helped with reactivity too. My dog is 30lbs and receives 75mg of trazodone/400mg of gabapentin and his clomicalm. This is behaviorist protocol. She said since he was still a little iffy going in we can bump up to 600mg gabapentin next time and a little more trazodone. She even said we can top off at 1000mg of gaba and still be within his limits 😳.
