Talk to your doctor about a mild sedative. Regarding sleep, I find no difference taking it vs not taking it by itself. If I add a benzo or cannabis, sleep can come on easier without feeling groggy. There’s much better meds for insomnia. I’m gabapentin lower dose for nerve issues at night (just nightly dose) and it’s sleep benefits dissipated quickly. I can take a larger dose to sleep but as an insomniac myself it only gives me “short sleep” as it cannot keep me asleep. I'm prescribed gabapentin 300mg at bedtime for sleep about 3 weeks ago. First started at 100mg the asked the doctor to increase due to ongoing insomnia. I still have some 100mg and have been taking it during the day for mild anxiety. Assuming this has addictive properties not sure it is a great replacement, I would through it in the ring with things to avoid like benzodiazepines. Never for sleep but rather for peripheral neuropathy around the time I had a microdiscectomy on L4-S1. And then I found an old bottle of gabapentin prescribed for shingles pain that I never took. So I decided to try it for sleep. I took 300mg last Friday, and WOW. I slept all night like a baby. For 8 whole hours. I woke up slowly and naturally, and was totally rested. I was maybe a little groggy, but fully awake after coffee. My psychiatrist said that I might be able to actually stop taking Clonazapam that I am taking for anxiety and sleep as well as the Lamotrogine (that I am taking as a mood stabilizer for bipolar) as Gabapentin can be effective in treating insomnia, anxiety and even act as a mood stabilizer for insomnia. I've been given almost all non-benzo sleep aids (trazadone, remeron, lunesta, hydroxyzine etc) and gabapentin is the only one that really helped.
