Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a fear of negative evaluation in social or performance situations and a strong tendency for sufferers to avoid feared social interactions or situations. Recent epidemiological studies suggest that the lifetime prevalence of SAD may be as high as 12% (Grant et al. 2005; Kessler et al. 1994, 2005a).
