Gabapentin is thought to work by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, like gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA helps regulate anxiety and stress responses in the brain, so increasing levels can cause a calming effect, reducing feelings of anxiety and promoting relaxation. The safety and efficacy of gabapentin in children undergoing surgery has been evaluated in several clinical trials. In 2010, Rusy and colleagues conducted a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of gabapentin in 59 children 9 to 18 years of age undergoing spinal fusion.7 Patients were randomized to receive gabapentin G Gabapentin may be effective for anxiety, but it’s usually not a first-choice medication for this use. Other medications have been studied more for anxiety, and they’re typically tried first. The recommended gabapentin dosage for anxiety and other conditions can range from 300 mg to 3,600 mg per day. Psychotherapy for anxiety disorders in children is also discussed separately. Gabapentin is a prescription drug or medication that is FDA-approved to treat nerve pain and seizure disorders. It also has other uses—including treating anxiety disorders—though it has not been FDA-approved to be used for this purpose. Anxiety In Children. When anxiety symptoms are reported with gabapentin, they are more strongly associated with children rather than adults. There is a strong warning of 'neuropsychiatric adverse events ' in children described in the prescribing information for Neurontin, the brand name for gabapentin: Gabapentin can be prescribed to children for specific medical conditions, but its use in pediatric patients depends on the age of the child, the condition being treated, and the guidance of a healthcare provider. Here’s an overview: Approved Uses of Gabapentin for Children. Epilepsy (Seizure Disorders): Advantages of Using Gabapentin for Anxiety. There may be some advantages associated with using Gabapentin for anxiety over other medications. The most notable advantage is that Gabapentin has a different mechanism of action compared to standard first-line treatments of anxiety such as serotonergic antidepressants. Her anxiety decreased to 0/10 within 48 hours of increasing gabapentin, and she remained in remission on gabapentin monotherapy for the next 70 days despite ongoing psychosocial stressors. Gabapentin, while slower, may still be effective for individuals with specific anxiety profiles, such as social anxiety. It may also be a better option for individuals who have both anxiety and chronic pain or those seeking a medication with a lower risk of misuse. Gabapentin may cause drowsiness, which is increased when used with other medicines that cause drowsiness. Any dose change must be guided by your doctor. Gabapentin should be decreased slowly over at least a week. Stopping gabapentin suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, difficulty sleeping, nausea, pain, sweating or seizures). Gabapentin is a medication that may be used off-label to treat anxiety symptoms, though it is most often prescribed for nerve pain and some seizure disorders. For example, buproprion, an inhibitor of dopamine and norepinephrine, has not been studied in children or adolescents with anxiety. Similarly, gabapentin has limited evidence of improvement in anxiety symptoms in adults, 71, 72 but has not been tested in youth. Gabapentin may have benefit for some anxiety disorders, although there are no studies for generalized anxiety disorder. Gabapentin has less likely benefit adjunctively for bipolar disorder. Gabapentin has clearer efficacy for alcohol craving and withdrawal symptoms and may have a role in adjunctive treatment of opioid dependence. Gabapentin isn’t usually used to treat anxiety alone. More often, it’s given to ease anxiety symptoms for someone who also has depression or bipolar disorder.
