It manifests itself as a purple rash that starts as a small spot on the forearm and often spreads from a spot to a larger blotch. If I leave it alone it fades and disappears after a few days. If scratch the itchy rash it seems to be very near the skin surface and bleeds very easily. I went to my PCP and then a dermatologist. I was miserable for a couple months, tried different medications and then it slowly eased off. I’m still not sure what actually helped. I took an oral anti fungal, had topical corticosteroids, capsaicin cream, oral antihistamine, and was just about to start taking gabapentin when it stopped. So I've been on Gabapentin for about a week now, and overall I've had positive results, and the side effects have been pretty mild. I have always been very sensitive to the sun, and apply sunscreen every morning, even in winter. On Sunday I developed a rash on my forearms and figured it was a reaction to the Gaba. A week later, 3 purple 'sores' on the outside edge of my right foot --- thought it was a spider bite -- that progressed into peeling, flaking, itchy skin. First bout with shingles. Only prescribed Vaktrex by doc. Saw doc < 24 hrs after rash started. On Day 2 and I’d say pain is around 2-4 range out of 10 through the day. Does it get worse on Days 3-7? Is Gabapentin mostly used to provide relief and not to prevent PHN? Just want to make sure i am doing what i can to help long term issues. Thank you. Gabapentin is helpful to some people with specific pain problems as many in the comments are suggesting. However if you are getting TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) to treat depression and/or anxiety keep in mind gabapentin can actually reduce the efficacy of the treatment.
