Gabapentin is commonly used to treat and prevent seizures in people with epilepsy or to treat nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia) that can occur after a viral infection called shingles. What Is Gabapentin Used for in Dogs? Gabapentin is a human medication, and its use in veterinary medicine is “off-label,” meaning it is not FDA-approved for pets. But gabapentin can be prescribed to help with pain, seizures, and anxiety in dogs. Preventing Seizures Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise, Horizant) is a medicine used to treat partial seizures, nerve pain from shingles and restless leg syndrome. It works on the chemical messengers in your brain and nerves. Recently, many prescribers have reached for gabapentin to treat back pain and a range of off-label uses. Gabapentin was originally developed as an anti-seizure medication. But healthcare professionals don’t just prescribe it for back pain. It’s also used for nerve pain, postsurgical pain, and occasionally anxiety. Gabapentin is also used to manage a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, which is pain that occurs after shingles. Gabapentin works in the brain to prevent seizures and relieve pain for certain conditions in the nervous system. It is not used for routine pain caused by minor injuries or arthritis.
