Gabapentin is a medication that treats nerve pain by calming overactive nerves in your body. It may also prevent and control seizures in people with epilepsy. You can take this medication by mouth with a glass of water. Respiratory depression and sedation, sometimes resulting in death, have been reported following coadministration of gabapentin with opioids (e.g., morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, buprenorphine) [see Warnings and Precautions (5.7)]. 3 SERIOUS WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS BOX Serious Warnings and Precautions Life-threatening Respiratory Depression Concomitant use of TEVA-GABAPENTIN with opioids may result in respiratory depression, profound sedation, syncope, and death. (see 7 WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS, Neurologic, Concomitant Use With Opioids) Check with your medical doctor or dentist before taking any of the above while you or your child are using gabapentin. This medicine may cause respiratory depression, a serious breathing problem that can be life-threatening, when used together with narcotic pain medicines. Moreover, because gabapentin causes somnolence and dizziness [see Warnings and Precautions (5.3)], patients should be advised not to operate complex machinery until they have gained sufficient experience on gabapentin to assess whether gabapentin impairs their ability to perform such tasks. Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking gabapentin: More common in children. Some side effects of gabapentin may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how gabapentin will affect you. Dizziness or drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries.
