When you stop taking any medication you have been taking for a while, it is important to know if you should taper off rather than abruptly stopping. For gabapentin, you should take a week to taper off. Any withdrawal symptoms you have should resolve within 10 days. There are much more significant issues with steroids and opioids. So to those who take Gabapentin long-.term, do you regret your decision to have started it? Do you still benefit from it? What are the major drawbacks? Please share your experience. EDIT: Thank you guys for your experience reports. It seems like that most people benefit from it anxiety-wise. I am gonna ask my doc about it. Gabapentin is incredibly dangerous, but try to tell that to any of the anti-opioid people and they get red in the face screaming at you about how opioids are devil pills that will kill you and gabapentin is the one miracle drug to ever exist. If you’re taking gabapentin, avoid driving until you know how it affects you. More rarely, gabapentin can cause fluid buildup (edema), weight gain, and vision problems. It can also cause diarrhea. In my experience, this came with memory issues both short and long term. For example, recalling people's names, or sports team rosters is harder, the higher the dose. The longer it's used, the more memories/pathways are removed - this seems bad but it's not if you've come through trauma, including anxiety/depression being forefront for a while. Yes, they happen, but I feel like reading everyone's horror stories on here might be feeding into it a bit as well. No one can tell you with certainty if gabapentin is "good or bad." Do the positives outweigh the negatives? Then make the decision for yourself. So I have battled with xanax and other drugs from the age of 19 to 23. If you’re not hungry beforehand take it with a shot of olive or vegetable oil as it binds well to fatty foods. It takes a while to kick in, sometimes 2 hours. Also more does not mean more of an effect. You’ll actually just build a tolerance but feel less of it’s effects because of its absorption rate decrease in high dosages. I know some people do very well on gabapentin (Neurontin), but many do not. Doctors tend to prescribe it freely, thanks to Big Pharma's sales force and their fabulous promotions, but the reality is that it's not a cure-all for everyone. I have been prescribed 200/300mg up to 3x a day and it’s good for masking anxiety sometimes but then you get used to it and when you feel your anxiety unmuted again you want to take another gabapentin. i try to use it twice a day, once in the AM once in the PM but it doesn’t make me super tired it just give me a little bit of a cushion to relax onto when I need it (cptsd etc). i’m not Every medication is reviewed wildly differently, everybody has their own experience. Some people will swear it did awful things to them, others will swear nothing else works. You wont know if it works for you unless you try it, and if it doesn't work, then you contact your doctor and go off of it! I have gone through this process countless In the meantime, you may want to take a look at some of the resources we've collected or read through some old posts using the search function. I was once on neurontin which I think the same as gabapentin. I stopped due to side effects and had bad withdrawals. If you take this long term ask to have your bone density tested because it’s been known to cause osteoporosis. As far as weed, I’m not sure. I mostly use weed now without prescriptions. But recently I've read some studies about gabapentin possibly having long-term negative effects on the brain. Some papers say that it's bad for children and fetuses because it blocks synaptogenesis, but safe for adults because mature brains don't really form new synapses. You can continue to take 300mg every 30-60 minutes to achieve higher dosages. I find 1000-1800mg similar to a few drinks, fun and manageable. The more you take per ~40minutes the smaller the percentage of that you absorb. Still, If you take 1600mg per dose you will absorb (27%)432mg, which is still a lot. Compared to 60% of a 300 mg dose. I only took gabapentin for a short period of time (less than a month) and stopped taking it after a short discussion with my primary care team about gabapentin for neuropathy when I only have numbness and no pain. It doesn't help with the numbness so I stopped taking it. you need to appreciate that you're lucky. gabapentin can have horrible withdrawals, especially for daily users. I had a horrible withdrawal coming cold turkey off of 1200mg/day last summer, but dosing once or twice a week hasn't given me any withdrawals. Your nerve pain will come back because you are no longer treating it. Those could be side effects of Gabapentin (I don't experience any except some weight gain - I've been on it for around six years for migraine relief at 300mgs twice daily), but they could also be side effects of a TBI - my partner suffered a TBI in 2014, and has experienced those same side effects, despite not taking Gabapentin. Gabapentin, on the other hand, is the best overall. In fact, I cant think of a single negative. It’s euphoric, relaxing, helps my anxiety, functional, no hangover, has an afterglow, and almost has a psychedelic touch to it. Basically, gabapentin is cool. Try gabapentin kids. Why using a drug with some of the most terrible withdrawals for anxiety The rebound effects will be worse for may months. Benzos are known for their withdrawals yet are so much milder than the ones caused by gabapentinoids. Except you don’t have to do this when you’re taking it as prescribed. Out of all the non-opioid multimodal analgesia, I find gabapentin/pregabalin to be the most likely to induce hypotension. They're also pretty bad as a single agent for analgesia, though not too bad as an adjunct.
