After taking Gabapentin (300mg, 3xs a day) for 10-yrs, I noticed increased tremors in my left side neck, right arm and left leg (like a z pattern). A nurse told me it's essential tremors, but I said it's from the Gabapentin. I continued to take it because having less pain was more important. Like topiramate, gabapentin (sold as a generic and under the brand name Neurontin) is typically prescribed off-label if primidone and/or propranolol don’t work adequately for essential tremor. Some evidence supports gabapentin for reducing hand tremors . Some open-label studies have indicated that gabapentin can be effective in reducing the severity of tremors, leading to improved daily functioning for some patients. However, these positive findings haven’t been consistently replicated in controlled clinical trials. Gabapentin for Benign Essential Tremor User Reviews Brand names: Neurontin, Gralise, Gabarone, Fanatrex Gabapentin has an average rating of 6.8 out of 10 from a total of 15 reviews for the off-label treatment of Benign Essential Tremor. Gabapentin is extremely well tolerated, even in geriatric patients. 5 A large, multicenter trial is indicated to further study gabapentin for ET. References 1. Burrows GT, King RB. Alprazolam (Xanax), atenolol (Tenormin), gabapentin (Neurontin) monotherapy, sotalol (Betapace), and topiramate (Topamax) may reduce limb tremor associated with essential tremor. Objective: To review the use of the antiepileptic drug gabapentin for the treatment of various types of tremor. Data sources: A search of biomedical literature was completed through MEDLINE and EMBASE (1993-May 2002) to identify all clinical trials pertaining to the use of gabapentin for the treatment of tremor in humans. While gabapentin is primarily prescribed for nerve pain, seizures, and restless legs syndrome, it can sometimes induce or exacerbate movement-related issues such as tremors, myoclonus (sudden muscle jerks), and myokymia (muscle twitching). Propranolol and primidone (Mysoline) are the most commonly used therapies for essential tremor, but these agents are ineffective for up to one-half of patients. In 2005, the American Academy of Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder that often becomes refractory to conventional pharmacologic management. Open-label studies suggest that gabapentin is efficacious for ET, but the r Primidone (Mysoline) may be effective in people who don't respond to beta blockers. Other medicines that might be prescribed include gabapentin (Gralise, Neurontin, Horizant) and topiramate (Topamax, Qudexy XR, others). Side effects include drowsiness and nausea, which usually disappear within a short time. Tranquilizers. Gabapentin. Gabapentin (structure similar to GABA) can be used as a monotherapy or as an add-on therapy for treatment of ET.[7–9] It is started at 300 mg 3 times daily, and titrated up to 1200–1800 mg/day. The drug is usually well tolerated with few side effects (sedation, irritability, ataxia, weight gain). Patients with mild tremor may experience complete tremor suppression with available therapies. However, the goal of therapy for most patients is to reduce tremor severity enough to prevent disability while minimizing medication side effects. Hi all, I was diagnosed with Dysautonmia and was prescribed Gabapentin 100mg by my neurologist. I wanted to know if anyone has taken this medication for internal tremors and what was your experience? Drugs most commonly used to treat the condition include beta-blockers such as propranolol (Hemangeol, Inderal LA, Inderal XL, InnoPran XL) and an epilepsy drug called primidone (Mysoline). Patients and Methods 16 patients with essential tremor (6 with a new onset and 10 with a 2-week washout period of previous treatment with propranolol hydrochloride) received gabapentin (Neurontin), 400 mg 3 times daily; propranolol hydrochloride, 40 mg 3 times daily; and placebo for 15 days with a 1-week washout period between treatments. Essential tremor can begin at any age. However, a person’s risk of developing it increases with age. In people with essential tremor, the condition usually worsens over many years. The cause of essential tremor is not yet known. Tremors happen when nerves do not communicate well with the muscles they support. Essential tremor can occur in Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder that often becomes refractory to conventional pharmacologic management. Open-label studies suggest that gabapentin is efficacious for ET, but the results of controlled trials have been mixed.
