Yes. the drugs do diff things. propranolol will lower your blood pressure and heart rate. gabapentin has a more mental effect. I only used propranolol for when I was having a panic attack and could feel my heart racing. It helps reduce the effects of adrenaline on blood pressure and heart rate. I took gabapentin for neuropathy & fibromyalgia and never noticed it doing much of anything for either one (or my anxiety)—it just made me gain a lot of weight. The thing that actually stopped my frequent panic attacks was prozac, and now that I'm medicated for ADHD, my anxiety has gone down even further. Hey dear people, dear sufferers, I suffer from severe depression & social anxiety since I was 15 yrs old (now 21). The social anxiety became so Fortunately for me, my bodily reactions are what distress me the most. I’ve been through years of CBT therapy that helps me process my thoughts, but sometimes those automatic responses, like a racing heart or even anxiety-induced brain fog, are more difficult to manage without medication. I use propranolol for test anxiety and public speaking. If you have severe social anxiety and you feel its made worse by what anxiety does to your body (heart rate, breathing, shaking, shivering) consider propranolol. Its very safe and works by blocking Beta receptors (Beta 1 and Beta 2) throughout the body. Gabapentin and pregabalin both have RCTs showing efficacy over placebo for social anxiety disorder; however, it should be noted that improvement was associated with higher doses than are often tolerated (e.g., >2,100 mg daily for gabapentin and 600 mg total daily for pregabalin) (113–115). Propranolol is great for physical symptoms but it doesn’t do much for the mental anguish that causes the anxiety. Same with benzos IMO. Gabapentin does help quiet anxious thoughts, helps me focus and is a smidge stimulating for me as well. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. I take 400x3 right now, but Thursday I plan on asking for 600x3. The research that has been done and the literature on the Gabapentin for anxiety is actually a pretty high dose upwards of 2400-3600mg to actually be chronically effective from what I’ve read. I never want to utilize said dose. Propranolol works really well for my physical symptoms of anxiety, but it doesn't calm my mind like sedatives do. I try to avoid using them together because I don't want to numb myself, I just want the anxiety level to be tolerable. GABA aka gamma-aminobutyric acid is NOT GabaPentin. GABA is the skeletal building block from which GabaPentin, PreGabalin/Lyrica and Baclofen are derived. Note that GABA is contained within the names of GabaPenti and PreGabalin. I tried it years ago, but don't recall much in the way of anxiety relief. I’ve been on Gabapentin for a while for anxiety and it works well, but I want something safer with less withdrawal issues. If you’ve been on both, does Propranolol work as good as Gabapentin for anxiety? I took it for SOS anxiety for about a year. propranolol works for anxiety because it lowers your blood pressure, which helps you relax. They usually prescribe it to people who have both hypertension and anxiety. Sometimes 1 pill would feel like too much, so my dr. had me take 1/2 instead. Propranolol mainly acts on peripheral nervous system so it wouldn’t make you sluggish but only takes away physical symptoms of anxiety. But if you anxiety isn’t primarily physical, Propranolol wouldn’t help you. They also say Propranolol can cause insomnia but I personally haven’t experienced it. After meeting with my doctor/psychiatrist I felt better in relation to my health anxiety while I was prescribe Gabapentin 100mg 3x per day, buspirone morning and night, propranolol 10mg morning as well as 100mg of Wellbutrin in the mornings. I felt like I was recovering from the bad panic attack weekend but I still feel disconnected and super To me, propranolol sounds perfect to lower my heart rate and stop my sweating in anxiety-creating situations. But it seems like an SSRI like Zoloft is more commonly prescribed. Has anyone had experience with making this decision, or having a doctor want SSRI vs. propranolol? Is anyone afraid to take Propranolol? My doctor prescribed it and so far I have only taken 5mg because I am afraid. I do not have high blood pressure, but am told it helps with anxiety The beta blocker Propranolol is approved for social anxiety. Pros: You can take it to reduce anxiety before stage performances or public speaking. It doesn’t make you sleepy. Cons: It can increase the risk of low blood pressure or dizziness. My Dr prescribed me 10mg of propranolol for symptoms I was experiencing with anxiety, and told me to take when symptoms arise. The issue I'm facing, is that I'm too nervous to take it. My most frequent episodes of anxiousness and increased HR happen when I'm trying to fall asleep. These include propranolol (aka Inderal). All use of this class is off label (i.e. not FDA approved) for anxiety. Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline (mediated by actions at beta receptors).
