The second cat is extremely sweet and friendly to humans, but she attacks 2 of the other cats (one of them being the pee-cat, which probably adds to that cat’s stress). We have 5 cats total. Sweet cat only attacks the 2 cats who won’t attack her back bc they’re too scared. They just run. One of our cats is really sensitive to gabapentin, so we tend to reduce the recommended dose; if the cat doesn’t get the whole dose you’ll probably be fine. Also, gabapentin can be compounded into cat-friendlier flavors. I used to confine my cat to my room for the overnight portion of the gabapentin dosing. He was old though, and past the age where he was active at night. Once the lights were out, he wouldn't move around much. If your vet opens at least two hours before your cat's appointment, try calling them and asking if there's a lower effective dose. In cats, gabapentin is most often used as a pain medication for chronic pain, such as from arthritis. Gabapentin is also recognized as beneficial in reducing the fear responses that a kitty may have to the stress of handling and being examined at the vet. Long story short me and my boyfriend are being forced to decide to 1.) live with our cat that may continue to harm me/us without warning 2.) use gabapentin (a seizure / sedative medication) for the rest of his life or 3.) euthanasia. We have been struggling with this for about 15 days now since the last attack. The only change was an increase in gabapentin. In healthy cats gaba gets flushed out in few hours but in ckd cats it takes maybe twice as much. Its pretty safe for the kidneys, many of us use it regularly and long term. My ckd cat takes about a third of a 100mg daily and he tolerates it fine. He is 6kg. He just gets more relaxed with subQs. But if your cat has never had it, it might knock My cat hates the vet. She hisses and scratches so they prescribed gabapentin to calm her down before visits. I can tell it’s working because she’s drowsy, calm and unsteady on her feet. But when she gets to the vet it almost immediately wears off. The last appointment they ended up having to sedate her just to examine. The good news is that within 48hrs of stopping the gabapentin, both my cats are back to normal. There are various other painkillers available. Even cats with CKD can take NSAIDs such as loxicom. Otherwise, buprenorphine is really helpful. It can also make cats a bit zombie-ish, but in my experience less so than gabapentin. Gabapentin is a very safe medication with very wide dosing range, she will be fine. 100 mg is a standard dose. It works very well but there are times where the cat can manage to fight of the sedation, hence why your vet probably wants you to dose at night and again before the vet visit. Gabapentin is generally safe and well tolerated, but as with everything, it varies from cat to cat. That's why the vet told you what they did. Every vet would say the exact same thing, to basically any drug, for anxiety or any other thing. Gabapentin is as much a sedative as a pain killer, according to my cat vet, and you might only need a small amount to calm her as you are not trying to relieve pain. Discuss with the vet the fact that you don't want a knocked out cat and are concerned about that aspect of using it. Increasing the dose slowly seems to really work well for him - cats can go way up to something like 150mg three times daily on Gabapentin (safely!), so his dose is still VERY low considering. Question: Can I give my prescription for gabapentin to my cat who has been taking it in a liquid form but has almost run out. I've been giving him 1ml liquid twice a day. The prescription I have is 300mg powder capsules that I would have to dose appropriately. Background: Male tabby 14 years old. It is a very safe herb for cats and dogs, in age related issues like arthritis, aches, pains etc. It is traditionally considered anti-ageing herb in our medicine system. I have seen good results in cats. At first I thought it was the baby food I gave him the pill in (because I had to give a lot to get a high dose in him) but I have given my cat baby food before with other medication and never had an incident like today. Has anyone heard of a dose that high of Gabapentin? Gabapentin is usually tapered off in seizure patients and in patients that have been taking the drug for an extended period of time for the reasons you stated, but not typically in dogs or cats with no seizure or epilepsy history taking it for a short time to manage acute pain. Given the very real concerns surrounding manufacturing standards of CBD products, the difficult legal status of the products, and the availability of medications TL;DR: anyone here have experiences giving their cats Gabapentin for anxiety? More specifically, has anyone used Gabapentin for cat introductions? Is this a safe option? How did it go?
