I'm wondering what everyone's experiences are with gabapentin for travel, especially long drives? How relaxed does it make them? I did search the forum and read through some older posts but looking for more info. The only change was an increase in gabapentin. The vet used the same amount of ketmine as his precious one as a general anesthesia. So we believe the gabapentin is the root cause, but we aren't sure. However, it affects every cat differently so I would definitely recommend a trial dose to see how it affects her. I travel frequently with my two cats. In the backseat they have a travel tent with food, water, and a litter box. They're both harness trained so I'll find a safe, quiet place for them to stretch their legs every 3-4 hours. One of my girls gets anxious sometimes and when that happens I give her a melatonin treat to calm her down. Don't worry, there's always people like this in animal threads. Every vet I've ever seen here in France has recommended gabapentin for travel - a couple of weeks ago the vet that currently takes care of my cat told me they regularly use 100mg - 300mg on cats that get anxious about going to the clinic and have never had any issues whatsoever. And in the case of you not knowing yet what the issue is, gabapentin is also used to help relieve anxiety in animals. It is considered safe for long term use which is why it is one of the most common pain relievers prescribed (in humans, dogs, cats, etc) So I’m theory it’s should be offering your cat some pain relief. I have to give my cat 100 mg of gabapentin tonight and 100 mg tomorrow 3 hours before the vet visit as she is getting her blood drawn. I’m nervous because she’s a 9.7 lb cat and I don’t know anything about how sedatives work on cats. I gave my cat gabapentin and calming drops together for shorter car rides. Their vet has allowed them to take a double dose of gabapentin. I keep my cat in a carrier that they like. Every time I’ve traveled with her, even on a 10 minute car ride to the vet, she yowls and often pees or poops in the carrier. Hence the gaba. Gabapentin is a commonly-prescribed medication for cats, used most often for chronic pain conditions, and as a pre-medication to relieve stress or anxiety before veterinary exams or travel.
