First I got off Gabapentin for 6 weeks. I lost nearly 40 pounds, without doing anything. I was rapidly gaining weight on a less 800 calorie diet. I shot up from 160 to 210 in 6 months. I adjusted my dosage to start taking less Gabapentin. I noticed eating makes the bloating and weight gain worse. The only change was that I was upped from 300mg per day to 1800mg. No change in diet, not eating any more than I did before. Therefore, I'm chalking it down to a mix of slower metabolism and water retention. I’ve been taking gabapentin for six months for nerve pain. I’m on 1800mg a day - 3 x 600mg. At the same, I'm taking a very high dose of gabapentin (2700 mg) which really helps my severe anxiety (this dose was prescribed by my psychiatrist). I've read that in same cases Gabapentin can cause weight gain, especially since I'm also taking a mood stabilizer. I wanted to find out if Gabapentin causes weight gain in your guys experiences? Other gabapentin side effects include edema (fluid buildup), weight gain, and eye problems, but these aren’t as common. Rare but serious gabapentin side effects include mood changes in children. I think I am hungry but then I look at food and I just the thought of eating it makes me want to throw up. I was on 600mg and tapered slowly over 4+ months. I lost water weight every time I stepped down the dose (e.g. 600mg to 500mg, 500 to 400) and have lost a total of 4.5 pounds. Side effects for me on Gabapentin did not include any weight gain. Mine were more typical such as drowsiness, unsteadiness on feet when first getting up and foggy thinking. These dissipated as my body became more used to the 2100mg/day dose - split into 3 times a day. The issue isn't fat with gabapentin and pregabalin. Calcium channel blockers cause fluid retention. This is what causes the weight gain. So if you go on a diet or you exercise you tend to burn calories and reduce fat but the fluid retention stays there.
